I'll Pray You Home
by Tom Dermody |
| A song with sentiments understood by parents
everywhere has touched the hearts of thousands of families with loved ones
serving in the military overseas, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. Written and sung by Tom Dermody of Peoria, Ill., "I’ll Pray You Home" tells of a prayer habit of his own mother, Ruth. She would light a candle when any of her seven children were out late or travelling, even into their adult years, and often spoke of how she would "pray" them home safely. When the war in Iraq began in March of 2003, Tom’s niece Melissa remembered the family song as she watched parents of early prisoners of war being interviewed on television. Melissa suggested Tom adapt "I’ll Pray You Home" to show how the POW's parents and so many throughout the U.S. were praying for loved ones overseas. The song was published, recorded in CD form and became a
local hit in Peoria, raising hundreds of dollars for the group Peoria
Area Troop Support. The message of "I’ll Pray You Home"
has since spread throughout the country via its own Internet site, www.prayhome.com.
Tom has performed the song at many troop support events and church services. |
