Soldiers Name: Specialist Matt Maupin Message: Dear Carolyn, Keith, Stephen, Leann, Micah, and the entire Maupin family: We have now reached the third month of Matt's captivity. Three months have passed since all of America, and the whole world, became aware that a Soldier named Matt was in trouble. Three months since all of America, and the whole world, fell on their collective knees, and began praying: "Lord, let Matt live. Let Matt come home." I assure you all that there are those around America, and the world, who continue that prayer: "Lord, let Matt live. Let Matt come home." And the most amazing thing is, we don't even know Matt. We have never met Matt. But, in these past three months, we've all "adopted" Matt. He is our own son. Isn't it strange that if the events of April 9th had never occurred, we probably would have never known that a Soldier named Matt was even over in Iraq. We all knew there were thousands of Soldiers over there (some are even our own sons or daughters). But, until April 9th, we had no idea that Matt was one of them. But, we do now. And to us, Matt is family. His family has become our family. And, his community has become our community. And because we have learned how precious Matt is - we continue to pray. Because we know that God is faithful: "Remember that the Lord your God is the only God, and that He is faithful." (Deuteronomy 7:9a) Matt is not only precious to all of us, Matt is precious to God. Because God loves Matt. And, because He does, Matt knows that He is with him, holding his hand, walking him through it all. And, Matt has the assurance that God will never leave him. Matt can look up to Heaven, and confidently say, "I am Yours!": Who am I? That the Lord of all the earth, Would care to know my name, Would care to feel my hurt. Who am I? That the Bright and Morning Star, Would choose to light the way, For my ever wandering heart. Not because of who I am, But because of what You've done, Not because of what I've done, But because of who You are. And You've told me who I am... I am Yours. Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I fear? Soldiers Name: Specialist Matt Maupin Message: Dear Carolyn, Keith, Stephen, Leann, Micah, and the entire Maupin family: Today (July 13th) we celebrate Matt's 21st Birthday.
The traditionally held belief here in America is that when you turn 21, you are considered a "full" adult, allowed certain "privileges" reserved only for adults. You are finally considered "all grown up". But, I want you all to know that Matt became an adult, he "grew up", the moment he raised his right hand, and said, "I, Keith Matthew Maupin, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic...So help me God". He willingly became a Soldier knowing what might be expected of him. And, he went when called to do so; not knowing what the future might hold for him. Following through with a commitment - that's what makes you an adult. But, we still say, "Happy 21st Birthday, Matt!". Though we all know that the circumstances he finds himself in today seem anything but "happy". Nevertheless: We want to remember your "special" day, Matt. Twenty-one years ago, your family thanked God for you - their blessing from Him. Today, we are honored to be able to join them in thanking God for you - you are a blessing to us all. Remember, Matt, that you are special: "I will praise You because I am unique in remarkable ways". (Psalm 139:14a) And, remember, Matt, God has His hand upon your life: "The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me". (Psalm 138:8a) Thank you, Carolyn and Keith, for Matt. Little did you know the impact your son would have on so many people, when he was born twenty-one years ago. Some people are specially chosen by God to change the hearts and lives of men and women, by showing them that His love transcends all circumstances. Your son, Matt, is one of those special people. (And, all of you are, too). You can't be with Matt on his birthday today, but we know that he is in your hearts today and always. He is in our hearts as well. And, Matt is always in God's. When destiny calls you You must be strong. I may not be with you, but you've got to hold on. They'll see in time, I know. We'll show them together. 'Cause you'll be in my heart. One night I was watching the news and heard about the tragic killing of the soldiers. When I heard that one of the boys serving was from Clermont County my heart sunk.
